Important Notes about Diarrhea in Puppies

Diarrhea can be a signal of serious health disorder in puppies. It is considered more as an indication rather than a sickness since its symptoms are mostly signs that something is not right with their health.



Just like in humans, diarrhea symptoms in pups are characterized by irregular bowel movements that are more frequent than normal. If not taken seriously, this condition may lead to lower life expectancy. An outbreak of diarrhea may last up to 2-3 days. If it takes longer than this, their owners should seek for a veterinarian’s advice to prevent worsening of the condition.



Diarrhea in puppies is caused by several reasons. Diet is considered the main factor causing mild digestive problems. If a puppy is fed incorrectly or overfed, mild diarrhea outbreaks may occur. Introducing new meals can give them the chance to familiarize the taste of other foods. However, there are foods that can cause diarrhea outbreaks as well.



Stress and vaccination are another cause of diarrhea in puppies. Diarrhea caused by stress is not serious compare to other diarrhea cases. Even a small change in their surroundings can make them feel fretful and stress causing mild diarrhea symptoms. Puppy vaccinations can cause diarrhea symptoms or vomiting after the "shot". Parasites, viral infections and worms can cause severe cases of diarrhea. Parvovirus and Caronavirus are leading viruses considered to cause the most chronic diarrhea outbreaks in puppies. Fasting is a known treatment for mild diarrhea. But you must not fast your puppy for more than twenty-four hours. Also, do not fast newborns or a puppy that is less than seven weeks old. There are also medications available for diarrhea treatment.



Preventing dehydration is the most important treatment for diarrhea in little dogs. Since frequent irregular bowel movements can cause loss of too much water in the puppy’s body, providing him with plenty amount of water or electrolyte supplement can help prevent loss of too much water in his body.
